The AGC signal level controller worked using an unmodulated carrier generated at the Headend and combined in with the system RF channel carriers. The carrier used was either 73.5 MHz in the guard band between Ch 4 and Ch 5 or 118.25 MHz just above the FM Bands.

Broadband Engineering (Augat) IC Upgrade For Jerrold Starline 1 Amplifiers Donated by Kaz Majewski, of Centre TV, Wheeling West Virginia
In the late 70's a subsidiary of Augat called Broadband Engineering introduced an Integrated Circuit upgrade for the Jerrold Starline 1 series of amplifiers. The upgrade increased the bandwidth from 220 MHz (Ch 2 to CH 13) to 300 MHz (Ch 2 to CH 23), used less power and increased the gain by 3 dBmV.
